VIKING S30 liferafts with extended service intervals

VIKING S30 is the manufacturer’s extended-service range of commercial liferafts, offered in throw-overboard, davit-launched and self-righting configurations. An approved unit pairs a 30-month full-service interval at a certified S30 station with an annual check by trained crew. Its sealed inner pack and container test point make that schedule possible; the interval belongs to the exact approved model, not every raft in a similar-looking canister.
The sealed pack makes the longer interval possible
VIKING offers S30 in throw-overboard and davit-launched versions, including self-righting configurations. The raft is sealed in a moisture-resistant membrane inside a rigid fibreglass container. A window at one end exposes the inspection panel, allowing the packing environment to be checked while the raft remains sealed. This is the visible feature that distinguishes the S30 container in the photographs on this page.
The arrangement reduces the number of times the raft must be removed and opened at a service station. It does not remove the annual inspection or change the need to act if the container, seal or installation is damaged. Standard and S30 rafts may share VIKING’s container and rack system, but a replacement still has to match the vessel’s approved capacity, launch method, emergency pack and installation.
What the crew checks each year
VIKING supplies an onboard case with the instruction manual, testing tool, logbook and special flashlight. The brochure shows a short recorded process: identify the raft and date in the log, use the tool at the container’s inspection point, then record the result. That annual check is evidence about the sealed pack and exterior condition, not a full raft service. The raft stays closed; inflation equipment and the survival pack are not examined in the way they are at a certified station. If an inspection fails or damage is visible, the crew needs the manufacturer’s current instructions and a service decision then, rather than simply recording another year and waiting for month 30.
The 30-month station visit still has a firm deadline
At 30 months the S30 goes to a VIKING S30-certified service station for specialist service. The station can open and assess the raft, deal with time-limited contents and repack it under the S30 procedure. An onboard inspection cannot take the place of this visit. VIKING says the extended-service date is based on manufacture and that the service extensions available for some standard rafts do not apply to S30 units.
This changes voyage planning as much as workshop frequency. A vessel may make fewer service stops, but the 30-month visit must align with a certified station and the vessel’s port schedule. VIKING’s brochure also cautions that specialised service and replacement costs can leave the overall cost similar to a standard raft, even when handling and transport are reduced.
Which S30 arrangement fits the vessel?
S30 names the service arrangement, not a single capacity or launch system. VIKING’s current product pages list throw-overboard S30 rafts from 6 to 35 persons and davit-launched versions from 12 to 35 persons, with SOLAS A or B emergency packs. The range also includes self-righting configurations. A throw-overboard raft is handled and released differently from one designed for davit launching and embarkation. The photographs below show a 25-person throw-overboard model and a 12-person davit-launched model; they are examples of different arrangements, not interchangeable specifications.
The exact model has to satisfy the vessel’s required number of persons, approval and emergency pack, as well as its stowage position, cradle, release equipment and launch height. A familiar-looking white container cannot settle those details. Compare the complete model designation and approval documents before treating the longer service interval as a reason to change raft type.
When is the extended interval useful?
VIKING presents S30 as particularly suited to operators with predictable port calls, a stable flag and access to certified service stations. Fewer station visits may reduce removal, barge, overtime and transport work. The trade-off is tighter planning: a vessel that changes routes, ownership or flag, or regularly calls at remote ports, may struggle to fit the required service into its schedule.
The brochure describes S30 approval under SOLAS/MED and relevant flag-state acceptance, with onboard testing covered by the IMO guidance for intervals of up to 30 months. That does not approve every S30 variant for every vessel. Check the exact type approval, operating requirements and current service record before adopting the interval, and use VIKING’s current instructions for the crew’s annual checks.
